Together To The Roots Initiative – Giving Back To Nature
Nairobi County – better known as ‘The City under the Sun’, enjoys exceptional environmental ambiance attributable to the second largest urban forest in the world: The Karura Forest. Due to the forest’s close proximity to a fast-growing city undergoing industrialization, the forest continues to face deforestation threats as the city continues to make room for development projects.
The number of registered cars was reported at 1,893,461 units as at December 2019. According to the Economic Survey 2021 by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), new motor vehicle registration rose by 6% in 2020. Furthermore, the Buy Kenya – Build Kenya Strategy set in motion a record rise of 75.5% of new automobile sales in 2022, indicating a significant increase in motor vehicle ownership in the country. This, in effect, increases carbon emissions.
Momentum’s lending is predominantly against motor vehicles, as such, the business has taken on the responsibility to reduce the carbon footprint attributable to emissions from polluting motor vehicles by partnering with the community-based organization – Friends of Karura to drive afforestation.
Through the #TogethertotheRoots Initiative, Momentum Credit is actively contributing to the restoration of the 1,063-hectare Karura forest’s indigenous tree cover from 45% to 100%. This greening exercise forms part of the business’ environmental sustainability plan to restore biodiversity in Kenya, sequestering carbon and replenishing oxygen for future generations.
In April of 2022, Momentum through 20 of her staff planted more than 220 seedlings in the Karura Forest – Sigiria Nursery driving an increase in indigenous trees coverage , improving wildlife habitats for animals such as monkeys and over 100 bird species with the trickle-down effect of boosting both local and international tourism and increasing revenues from the tourism sector.
Guided by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), the business is intentional about addressing global climate change and supporting the country’s quest to mitigate and adapt to climate impacts resulting from greenhouse gas emissions.
As a key authority in the automotive industry, Momentum Credit continues to refine this category, boosting its professionalism, having sponsored students taking automotive courses at the Eastlands College of Technology – Read more
